The answer came soon after the move when director Jonathan Glazer phoned to ask if she would come to New York City to coach 11-year-old Cameron Bright, her client. He had just landed what would be his breakthrough role opposite Nicole Kidman in the 2004 movie Birth.

Big city accessibility

Jacqui, Cameron and his mother flew out of Nanaimo Airport four days after that phone call. Jacqui’s no stranger to last-minute flights. She and her clients have jetted to same-week auditions and screen tests in Vancouver, Toronto and Los Angeles. To the surprise of A-list producers, they always arrive on time.

Sophisticated travel

A frequent flyer through major hubs, Jacqui is quick to point out the ways Nanaimo Airport has become more sophisticated since its recent terminal expansion and upgrades. Reliability, an efficient flow, helpful service and stylish curb appeal top her list.

Now she’s proud to suggest the airport to her clients on the island and those in Vancouver and Los Angeles. Now the experience is a pleasure, she says.

Convenience on the clock and off

Jacqui and her husband Trent Kaese own nearby Cottonwood Golf Course and live on the property, also home to her talent coaching studio. The close airport proximity allows Jacqui to work from the island, and it allows Trent to golf in more tournaments abroad.

It’s no small task promoting Vancouver Island as one of the world’s top travel destinations. Each year Dave Petryk and his staff at Tourism Vancouver Island fly to 30 consumer and trade shows around the globe to spread the word.

The switch to easier business travel

In the past, Dave’s team would depart from Vancouver International Airport September through April, when weather affected reliability at Nanaimo Airport (YCD). But now, with YCD’s recent upgrades, they can fly from Nanaimo in any season.

So in spring 2011 they made the switch. Tourism Vancouver Island team now depart from Nanaimo Airport year-round.

Convenience & cost savings

No more leaving a day early in order to catch a morning flight. No more budgeting for airport hotel rooms. No more wasted hours on the ferry. Now the team is making better use of its time and money. Their quality of life has improved now that they’re spending less time away from home.

Dave can leave his house and be checked in 25 minutes later. When he comes home from a business trip, flying into Nanaimo Airport means he can hit his bed sooner.

All about the in-bound

In Dave’s business, easy access to the island can make or break tourism stats. He needs to convince potential visitors from Europe, Asia and elsewhere how easy it is to get here.

Reliable year-round service at Nanaimo Airport allows him to do that. It helps him sell Nanaimo, an hour drive from Victoria or three from Tofino, as the island’s best place to arrive.

Time is money. And André Sullivan is in the business of making the most of both.

He’s a high net worth wealth manager who travels once a month to see clients in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver. Nanaimo Airport, he says, is the only way he could possibly see them all regularly. It’s quick and reliable – the most efficient way to stay connected.

The need for speed

André is the kind of guy who thinks fast, talks fast and insists on traveling fast. He doesn’t mince words and doesn’t waste time. He likes to be able to work right up until he boards his flight. Nanaimo Airport’s check-in is quicker than anywhere else he’s traveled, leaving him more time to check e-mails and make phone calls.

Reliability in a global village

One snowy, foggy day last year André was landing in Nanaimo. When he heard the wheels hit the ground he knew reliability had reached a whole new level with instrument landing technology. For him, it was reassurance that even as his client base grows he can still live where he wants – on an island.

“We’re becoming a global village,” he says. “Right out of our back yard we have access to that global village through Nanaimo Airport.”
