Maintenance Equipment

Our airfield maintenance is undertaken by staff and contractors. The current compliment of airport owned heavy equipment includes:

    1. front end loader,
    2. snow blower attachment,
    3. two single-axle plow trucks and plows,
    4. runway sweeper; and
    5. liquid de-icer and solid de-icer spreaders.

Airside de-icers used at YCD are liquid potassium acetate and prill sodium formate. In addition, if required, winter maintenance contractors provide additional snow removal equipment.

Although not required by regulation, YCD provides an on-site first response service for aircraft emergencies.

Staff and contracted security personnel have received basic training in this regard and are able to provide this service 24/7.

The custom built response vehicle was purchased new in 2004 and has the capacity for 2,400 litres of water, 150 litres of foam and 135 kg of dry chemical. This unit allows for a timely initial response while awaiting arrival of off-airport fire departments.

Upgrades

Improvements to equipment ranged from high-tech computer systems to a $268,000 front-end loader/snow blower. The snow blower was purchased as part of a Federal Airport Capital Assistance Program (ACAP), and allows airport staff to complete work that previously had been contracted out. The new equipment was tested within weeks of delivery and performed above expectations during a three-day snowstorm.
