Thanks to the support of area residents and businesses the Nanaimo Airport will soon celebrate a huge milestone. The Airport’s year-long “Gaining Altitude – A Million and Beyond” campaign is the next step in the airport’s managed growth strategy that saw completion of a two-phase expansion plan between 2006 and 2011. During that time, 913,000 passengers travelled through YCD’s terminals and the airport is on target to reach its goal of one million passengers in summer 2012, helping to open up the potential for new aircraft landings, flight schedules, routes and destinations.
“We’re thrilled we will break the million passenger mark in the next month,” shares Mike Hooper, Nanaimo Airport President and CEO. “To celebrate we have an exciting 6 week promotion planned where 30 regional residents will have a chance to open a safe and win one million dollars, along with other great prizes from our community sponsors.” In addition to The Thanks a Million promotion, YCD is also planning a week of celebrations at the terminal around the millionth passenger. “It will be a festive environment with daily refreshments for travellers, our Ambassadors laminating luggage tags, and a special draw for those travelling,” Hooper said.
The celebrations will actually encompass two major accomplishments, the millionth passenger as well as double digit growth in passenger numbers in the past 10 months.
The Airport team is proud of these accomplishments, but Hooper is quick to share the praise “Collaboration and partnership has been the driving force behind our expansion and growth. Our success as an airport is tied directly to the support we receive from our air carriers, area residents, businesses, and elected officials. I extend a huge thank you to all of those that support the Nanaimo Airport, we couldn’t have done it without you.”
